Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative

Michael J Fox Foundation:  Parkinson’s Progression Markers Initiative Genetics

Time involved:  3 years (approximately 4 visits in the first year and only 2 visits/year in the subsequent years

Description:  The Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) is The Michael J. Fox Foundation's flagship biomarkers study seeking to learn more about the genetics of Parkinson's disease. PPMI is currently studying the connection between PD and having a mutation in the LRRK2 gene — the single most common genetic contributor to PD.  Whether you have PD or not, you may be eligible to receive genetic counseling and testing at no cost to determine if you qualify to participate in PPMI.

Requirements:  This arm of the study is for
People with Parkinson's who are of Eastern European (Ashkenazi) Jewish, North African Berber, or Basque ancestry.

  • Individuals without PD who are related to someone with PD AND who are of Eastern European (Ashkenazi) Jewish, North African Berber, or Basque ancestry.

Memory Research Study In Parkinson's Disease and Dementia

J. Vincent Filoteo, Ph.D. is currently conducting a research study examining how Parkinson's Disease and dementia affects the abitlity to learn new information. Participants in this study are asked to come to the San Diego VA Medical Center and take a computerized and paper/pencil tests that will evaluate memory and attention. If you are possibly interested in participating in the study, please contact Dr. Filoteo's laboratory at the VA San Diego Healthcare System at (858) 552-8585 ext. 5593. His assistant will explain the study and determine whether you are appropriate for participation.

Criteria

  • ages 55 – 80
  • Parkinson's Disease Diagnosis
  • No Diagnosis of memory Problems
  • No other neurological syndrome
  • No anticholinergic drugs for Parkinson's Disease
  • No Deep brain stimulating surgery
  • English native speaker
